Does anyone even celebrate May Day anymore? I don’t even know what today is about, I just know I have memories, fond memories, of May Day.
Every year, my grandma would break out the paper and tape and glue. She taught me how to fold and secure the paper into a cone shape and attach string so they could be hung on a doorknob. I would go pick flowers in the yard (with Grandma’s permission) and then we would put some yummy treats in the “baskets”. She would instruct me which doors to put them on and give me strict instructions on knocking or ringing the bell and then running! I always loved this tradition. But to be honest, I have no idea what this tradition is event about or if people even still participate.
As I reflect on this and who my grandma was, I know that it was never about the holiday or the tradition; she was teaching me to be kind. How to give anonymously and how to love people with no expectation in return. Perhaps we should bring this seemingly dead tradition back. More children should learn this selfless act of giving with no recognition.
I shall start with my littles at home.
Happy May Day!
